Youth Programmes

Lions implement targeted, creative projects to meet the specific needs of local children

Peace Poster

"The theme of the 2009-10 Peace Poster Contest is "The Power of Peace." Students, ages 11, 12 or 13 on November 15, are eligible to participate. Each year's contest consists of an original theme incorporating peace. Participants use a variety of mediums, including charcoal, crayon, pencil and paint, to express the theme. The works created are unique and express the young artists' life experiences and culture.

Our club sponsors the program in our community for children in local schools or organized, sponsored youth groups. Through the contest, students are encouraged to visually depict their interpretation of the contest's theme.

Effective Speaking

PURPOSE OF THE CONTEST: To provide an opportunity for competitive effective speaking and to stimulate self-expression and independent thinking among students. The Lions Clubs, by participating in this contest, afford students in their area a chance to participate in Canada's largest Effective Speaking Contest, held in both English and French languages.

Eligible Contestants: The contest is open to students enrolled in public or private schools or their equivalent in Multiple District "A". A Lions Club or a Lioness Club may sponsor students in each language category and grade division and they may compete in the Zone, Regional or District competitions, even though the area school serves several communities, each having a Lions Club.

Sight and Hearing

Since 1983 our Club has been a major supporter of the Lions Foundation of Canada who supply dog guides for the visually blind, hearing impaired, and the physically handicapped. To date we have donated over $210,000 to this Foundation. From its inception the programme has partnered over 1500 dogs with an individual recipient. Currently we are graduating 100 dogs annually.

Locally we provide an eye screening survey of kindergarten children to detect a possible visual impairment . The parents are subsequently notified through the schools of the test results and professional follow up if required is left to their discretion. In cases where glasses are required and there is a financial hardship, glasses may provide through club funding.

We also provide funds to Lake Joseph Camp for the Blind and for a winter camping experience for visually impaired students. Another focus of Club activity involves the collection of eye glasses for distribution in The Third World.

Lions Quest

A significant focus in recent years has been our involvement in a scholarship programme in partnership with our local high schools. Winners are eligible to receive bursaries in order to assist in paying for their post secondary education. Lions have also been instrumental in setting up Lions Quest a life skills and anti drug learning experience focusing on our elementary schools. We also promote effective speaking and Peace Poster contests.
